The Virginia Table Company builds furniture by hand in an old apple-packing factory in the
Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Our family has been working wood in Virginia since the 18th
century. Most of our furniture designs are inspired by the “neat and plain” furniture of 18th
century Virginia. The plain style with its emphasis on good proportions and lack of ornament
fits today’s lifestyle perfectly. Each piece is made at a bench and signed by the craftsman.
We use the same proven construction methods that 18th century cabinetmakers used -
mortise and tenon, dovetails, and wooden pegs. We use American timbers including timber
harvested on our own land in the  Blue Ridge Mountains. Our 43,000 square foot factory can
accommodate over 50 workers, however we are set up to build furniture by hand in the old
time manner. We are committed to hand-made quality even though it is on a large scale.

A significant number of our workers are early retirees from the corporate world. Others are a
wide mix of people from recent high school graduates to stay at home dads or moms that
work part-time. The one thing that tends to be common to all of them is a desire to work with
their hands to make something of lasting value. Most of them could make more money
elsewhere, but have chosen the satisfaction of working as a craftsman over higher pay.
