| Southern Windsor Chairs Made of 100% solid American hardwoods. These chairs are authentic reproductions of American antiques from about 1765. They are made the same way they would have been made during the period. The bent parts are made of Oak which has long stringy fibers that tend to go the entire length of the part. This allows the parts to be made thinner for a more delicate and airy design while still remaining strong. Maple is used in the legs for its strength its ability to retain crisp details when turned on a lathe. The seats are made of poplar which is a softer wood that allows easy carving of the deeply saddled contours in the seat. The seats are almost 2’’ thick for strength yet have their front edges carved to a fine line to appear thinner and more delicate than they really are. The legs go all the way through the seats and are wedged in place. The spindles are done the same way where they go through the back. This is the result of tedious hand work, but makes the chairs incredibly strong as well as historically correct. The design and construction of this type of chair was at the cutting edge of human capability in the 18th century. It demonstrates an understanding of how to work with wood rather than an attempt to conquer it. They also demonstrate a sophisticated sense of design that is sadly lacking in today’s mainstream furniture industry. Very comfortable! Made of three woods - Poplar seat, Maple legs, & Oak bendings. Available Standard Finishes: Golden Maple, Early American Maple, Southern Maple, York County Cherry, Old Virginia Cherry, Antique Cherry, Black Lacquer, Worn Black Lacquer, Cream Lacquer, and Worn Cream Lacquer.
